7th Grade Science

 

        The students are studying chapter 24 about Immunity.  Section one covers communicable diseases.  Students learn about germ theory, mechanical and biological vectors, pasteurization, disinfectants, and antiseptics.  The immune system is the focus for section two; students will deepen their understanding of how the human body fights disease.  They will also learn about vaccines and types of immunity.  Section three covers non-communicable diseases and disorders.  Through a deepened understanding of our immunity, students will develop healthy habits and a deeper respect for the human body as a gift from God. 

 

 

Chapter 24 Objectives:

·  Define vocabulary words including pasteurization, pathogen, Koch, Lister, Pasteur, disinfectant, antiseptic, communicable disease, CDC, sexually transmitted disease, AIDS, immune system, antigen, antibody, active immunity, passive immunity, vaccination, helper T cells, non-communicable disease, chronic disease, cancer, chemotherapy, allergy, and allergen.

·  Describe how Pasteur, Koch, and Lister worked in the discovery and prevention of disease.

·  Explain how viruses and bacteria cause disease. 

·  List diseases caused by viruses and bacteria.

·  Describe how an antibiotic works.

·  Explain how viruses affect cells, spread through populations, and can be prevented.

·  Describe how vaccines prevent viruses.

·  Describe the causes and treatments of sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

·  Infer why cleanliness is important in hospitals.

·  Describe the natural defenses your body has against disease.

·  Explain how HIV affects the immune system, is transmitted, and can be treated.

·  Differentiate between active and passive immunity.

·  Describe the causes of non-communicable diseases, including diabetes and rheumatoid arthritis.

·  Describe the basic characteristics of cancer.

·  Explain what happens during allergic reactions.

·  Understand Basic First Aid procedures.
