why:

The colonist declared freedom from Britain because; the British were very controlling and were making them do everything that they said. They were taxing them a lot and they wanted democracy.

how:

Thomas Jefferson wrote it and then Benjamin Franklin and John Adams made a few minor changes to it. On July 2, the congress approved the lee resolution. The delegates began to debate Jeffersons draft. A few passages including the one condemning king George for encouraging the slave trade were removed. Most of the other changes were just dealing with the style. On July 4 the congress adopted the final draft of the declaration.
